Guest Post: CYBORG’S REVENGE by Pauline Baird Jones
Welcome to another special Pets in Space edition of Dead Author Live! I’m excited today to talk to you about Pets in Space 4!
One of the things that gives the Pets in Space anthology an extra dose of heart, in my opinion, are the pets.
If you’ve had a pet or pets in your lives, then you know what I’m talking about. Our pets give us unconditional love when we most need it—and they can also keep us humble when we need that reminder. I know our late cat, Felix would lick away my tears—and remind me that I was a mere human.
We’ve had a wide variety of pets sharing star billing with our heroes and heroines in the last four years. We’ve had some extraordinary cats and dogs and some very alien—but lovable and sometimes dangerous—creatures. Personally, I’ve had a bearded dragon, a parrot with some unusual talents, and a caticorn. They’ve all played a key role in my stories and surprised me as much as their humans when they helped saved the day.
This year, my pet is a snake, about the size of a boa conscritor. I know. I am not quite sure how this happened. I might be a little afraid of snakes. (I hear my hubby laughing back there somewhere. He’s seen me run from a water snake.)
Anyway, Snake was liberated from a very nasty pirate in my Project Enterprise novel, Lost Valyr. Snake attached to Rap, the hero of my Pets in Space story, Cyborg’s Revenge. And yes, her name is Snake.
Why Snake? Well, Rap isn’t the most creative with names and he also didn’t know he could talk to Snake until he got his cyborg enhancements. That’s also when he found out that Snake was a she and not a he.
Snake’s name isn’t the only secret lurking under the reptile’s hide. She also has some surprising skills that help save the day. But the greatest thing that Snake and the other pets offer to their humans is their unconditional love, companionship, and loyalty.
And I never thought I’d say that about a snake.
Cyborg’s Revenge is a connected story in my Project Enterprise series. There are currently eight books and several short stories you can check out at on my website at paulinebjones.com.
What’s it about you ask?
They say you can’t go home again, but what if it is the only way to truly be free? Rap and Ale have a mission to neutralize the man who enslaved them and their crew. It’s dangerous, with a high probability they will fail, but it is the only way to be truly and completely free of their past—and free to find a future with each other.
I’d like to read you a short teaser from Cyborg’s Revenge:
Rap studied the hangar bay—what he could see through drifting smoke and lines of fire.
“We can’t get in,” he said. He stared at Ale, words clogging his throat. So many words. So little time.
Snake has a plan.
Rap blinked. Snake had a plan?
Suddenly a high-pitched whine overrode all the sound in the bay.
Oh, and I would advise you to take cover for a few minutes.
Ale matched his crouch against the edge of the door, her back against his as she prepared to defend his six. The feel of her there, of knowing she was with him as she’d always been, he felt strength and resolve flow into his bones and muscles. It flowed into his heart.
“I wonder…” she murmured.
“Wonder what?” he asked.
“What a Snake’s plan looks like?”
Can Rap and Ale defeat their enemy and find their own happy-ever-after? Only Rap’s chatty pet Snake knows for sure.
I hope you’re excited about Pets in Space 4 as I am! It feels like forever until Oct 8 and you get to read the stories, too!
